CHAPTER SEVEN

EROS MEASURED HIS words before he responded, wondering why her stony exterior bothered him quite so much.

He had met plenty of women in his life who pretended to be one thing when in fact they were another, his mother being the prime example. But that was not it. He didn’t care that his mother pretended to be kind on the outside when underneath she was far from it.

But with Priya he felt the compulsion to tap at that suit of armour she insisted on wearing to show her that he saw through the layer of perfectly polished ice she presented to the world. To see how far he could push to get a glimpse of what lay beneath.

‘Does my attention make you uncomfortable?’ he asked, gauging her reaction and knowing that if she said yes he would stop.

She looked away, hiding her expression behind the curtain of her long brown hair.

‘It’s inappropriate.’

‘That was not my question.’

She turned and pinned him with a sharp gaze, amber eyes burning in the candlelight, and he was struck by arousal so intense it took his breath away. What would it be like to unleash that fire? What would it be like to let her burn him in it?

Almost as though he had spoken out loud, her eyes darkened and almost as if against her own volition, her tongue darted out to explore her bottom lip in a quick lick.

He felt that lick deep in his gut and lower, taunting him with the sight of her perfectly pink tongue and the glistening trail it left on her full pouting lips. When she looked at him like that, he knew he wasn’t mistaken.

She had said that their relationship was to remain strictly business and he respected that but he didn’t believe that was what she truly wanted.

‘I am not the kind of man to play games where it counts, Priya. If I behave as though I am attracted to you it’s because I am. Very much so.’

She inhaled a sharp hiss of breath, but did not cut him with a sharp retort. So, the direct approach had got her attention. He would remember that. He sat forward, placing his elbows on his knees and looking up at her from under his brows.

It was the kind of look he normally reserved for a date when he wanted things to move further. A smouldering look that usually had an intense and sudden effect on the woman he directed it upon.

Priya bit down on her lower lip, displaying the tiniest flash of her white teeth as she held back whatever words she had been about to speak.

Tell me, he silently urged, then felt irritation flare as he watched her shrink back.

‘Does that usually work?’ she said breathlessly, trying and failing to appear unmoved. She gestured to her face and made an impressive attempt at imitating his expression.

Eros froze for a split second, then almost lost his composure completely, his mouth cracking into the barest smirk.

‘Yes, it does, as a matter of fact.
